Sumblog #7 Education

Education is a very large aspect when it comes to globalization. Education is something taken very seriously worldwide. After completing high school and going into the real world many can find themselves thanking the fact that they completed high school. Many may even take the next step to enter themselves in college. People even are able to study abroad and this has been a huge improvement throughout the last couple of years. Being able to study abroad changes someone’s education tremendously. With a higher education many are able to get better paying jobs and with studying abroad in the back ground they will have an even better chance because they have experience.

The problem with education can always back track to money. Education is extremely expensive! If education is so important to so many countries then why are we constantly being forced to pay more and more?

I feel as if we as a world is becoming better by trying to make people of different areas and cultures feel welcome. Places are starting to show different languages throughout the store and restaurants are starting to become more diverse. And I feel that schools are going to make it soon a requirement to have at least a few years of a different language. At this university they make us as sociology majors take a semester of Spanish 102. Which I agree is extremely important due to the fact that we will be working with many different types of people!

I love that we get to put a media part on your sumblogs. I always try to dig deep and try to find a “homemade” video of some sort. This video I posted shows interview of what people think about globalization and education. This also pinpoints many facts that people would not be fully educated on. I defiantly learned new things from this video.  Many compare the different educational systems from the different cultures they have lived in.

Sumblog 6

With all of the craziness going on with the government lately, I was really happy we were able to talk about economic related topics. Talking about this stuff helped me be able to understand it a little bit better.  We were given an extra credit worksheet and I took the opportunity to complete it. The questions made me do some research on how the dollar was being spent and how much are world market really works. I brought up that in this world today people are very money hungry. It only makes sense to why people would always what money seeing how all the media puts out there is what the new treads are and how to make yourself look better. I believe that a lot of it has to do with technology. Technology has grown rapidly over the past decade. It amazes me the things that people are coming up with. I thought that I had a nice phone but apparently there are a lot nicer ones out there. I cannot deny it, I like the newest thing but I feel as if I can live without some of the stuff they have out there! I was watching TV the other day and saw a commercial for a phone that is a wrist watch! Now that is ridiculous to me. Technology is defiantly taking over how the way people live. It seems that you can do anything with technology including shutting down the whole world system.

I posted this short video to explain how crazy things have changes over the years. It is saying facts like 1 in 8 people have gotten married from meeting online. They also say that there is on average 31 billion google searchs a MONTH! Also stating that in 2006 it was 2.7 billion. That is a crazy difference!

Sumblog 5 Causes of Poverty

Over the last week we talked about the causes of world poverty. One cause that was mentioned was legacy of colonism, this was shown in the video we watched. It seems that this mean when two colonies seem to not understand how to agree. And not being able to agree causes many problems. Another reason poverty is so large is because of overpopulation.  Overpopulation and poverty go together because of the lack of recourses. With the world being as overpopulated as it is we find ourselves running out of resources. Also, families that are in poverty seem to have a lot of children and children cost lots of money. The more children you have the more money you will lose to take proper care of them. While being in poverty you do not have the same resources as other. Contraception is not as common for people in poverty.   So overall this means that there is to many people for the amount of resources given.

Natural disasters can be a huge factor when dealing with poverty. Throughout my lifetime I have been aware of many disasters, one being the tsunami. That wiped out over 250,000 people, buildings, homes, ships, etc. This breaks my heart to see people’s lives get taken from them in the matter of minutes. Poverty happened quickly due to the amount of homes, buildings, etc that were destroyed. It has taken many years to rebuild the area that was affected and is still being redone to this day.

I posted below a video of the tsunami just to show how tragic it really was and you can just tell how the people were instantly affected by the natural disaster. It shows how in a matter of minutes everything was gone and people were left with nothing and for some including their own lives.

Sumblog 4 (Catergorized)

During this week of class we talked about how counties become categorized. They become categorized by western/nonwestern, developed/undeveloped, 1st world, 2nd world and 3rd world countries, etc. These categories can have a negative effect of the countries. For example the way we say nonwest sounds like a negative thing in my mind and it may give the same feeling to others as well. Being not western is like say they are not apart of the western cultures.  Wallerstein would divide up counties in order to help with the division of labor. He labels this pyramid as core, semi-periphery and periphery.   This shows that we are able to separate countries by political strength they have, the consumption of goods and economics. The core can be known as the higher part and the periphery is the lower thing. By calling a country undeveloped is almost a slap in the face for them. I feel that people should be encouraging to help the less fortunate places. In a sense being categorized will always happen in the world. This reminds me of high school and how people were constantly categorized for what  they did and who they are. It can be wrong to judge something but I feel as if these places would not function the same without being categorized.

I added a picture of the core, semi-periphery, and periphery.

This is like the one we learned about in class and it was a great way to help me understand exactly how to understand this method. Some would say that categorizing countries is a bad thing but I think that it is unrealistic to not categorize them. We can’t all make the same money and have the same things. It only makes sense to label places, people and even countries.
